Luxor

The ancient capital of pharaohs, where temples and tombs still tell the story of Egypt.

About Luxor
Known to the ancients as Thebes, Luxor is the world's greatest open-air museum — a city where Karnak's pillars, the Valley of the Kings, and the Nile's slow drift converge into a single sweep of history. It is the natural starting point of every classic Nile journey and the heart of Upper Egypt.
History
Thebes rose as Egypt's spiritual and political capital during the Middle and New Kingdoms (c. 2000–1100 BCE). Pharaohs from Hatshepsut to Ramses II shaped the city's temples on the East Bank and built their hidden tombs across the river. Roman, Coptic, and Islamic layers followed — each leaving stones, paintings, and stories that visitors still walk among today.
Best time to visit
October through April offers the most comfortable temperatures (18–28°C) and the clearest Nile light. November and February are peak; the shoulder months of October and April balance pleasant weather with smaller crowds. Summer (June–August) is hot but rewards early-morning explorers with quiet temples and lower prices.
